Academy update

November 20, 2009

November '09 update

Academics, Community, Culture, and Extracurricular activities …. all part of a successful beginning to our second year at The Academy at King. In September of this year, the TN Department of Education granted Category I status to our school which means that all credits and transcripts from The Academy at King will transfer to any other Category I, II, III, or VII school. This includes public schools and other accredited nonpublic schools.

In the area of academics, four new faculty members joined our staff this year. With the additional personnel came an increase in our course offerings and an Assistant Head of School. Students are now enrolled in new courses such as Biology, Geometry, Computer Science Basics, Pre-Calculus, Art I, US History, Chemistry, English III, and Spanish IV. An honors level is being offered in Biology, Geometry, World History, English I, English II, and Algebra II.

Along with increased academic offerings, The Academy continues to work to prepare our students for entrance into college. To help with this preparation we administered the PSAT on October 17. Twenty-five students showed up on a Saturday morning at 8:30 to take this test. Test results will be back to The Academy in December.

We are very proud of our students as they support the surrounding communities through community service. Our students have participated in three community service projects already this year. One of these projects was the “Coats for Kids” drive that is hosted annually by King College. In preparation for the event, Mrs. Marshall (instructor) and several of our students worked at King College one Friday evening organizing the many coats that were distributed to families in need. Our students also participated in the Annual Beaver Creek Cleanup again this year and the Student Government Association participated in Operation Christmas Child. Academy students donated shoeboxes filled with gifts to The Academy and the boxes were delivered to the Blountville collection location for distribution to needy children.

The seminar schedule continues to be a very interesting one for the students. In October, we attended the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough and heard several nationally known entertainers, visited the Gray Fossil Site where the fossil of an entire baby tapir was unearthed at their latest dig, and enjoyed an excellent presentation of “Frankenstein” at Barter Theatre. Our students always represent us so well; tour guides contact me with praise for their behavior and the excellent role models they are for other students in our region.

Our cross country team finished its inaugural year on October 22. The eight-member team competed in five events. All team members improved throughout the season and many are already thinking ahead to next year. Martial Arts and Cheer/Dance are two new elective courses that were added to the curriculum this year. The Cheer/Dance group has learned several routines and the Martial Arts students have advanced to orange belts.

Earlier this year the students voted for our school mascot and chose the panther to represent us. We continue to work toward offering more athletic and extracurricular opportunities at The Academy with plans for tennis and golf teams in the spring. We are also looking forward to the upcoming publications of our school newspaper and school yearbook and we have a Talent Showcase in the works for February or March of 2010.

Enjoy the upcoming holidays and thank you for your interest in The Academy at King!

Samaritan's Purse shoeboxes

November 13, 2009

The Academy at King Student Government Association decided to participate in this season of giving. Members of the SGA encouraged the student body to participate in Operation Christmas Child. Students assembled shoe boxes of toys and supplies to be delivered by Samaritan’s Purse to needy children in developing countries. We are proud to report that the students assembled 18 shoeboxes. A big thanks to all students and parents that participated in this very worthy community service activity!
